100 tallest buildings in the world

by | Dec 16, 2020

There has always been a huge competition between the tallest buildings in the world. As soon as one of them takes the throne, it doesn’t take very long before new projects are released with the purpose of building something even taller.

The world is yet to see the reach of architectural development and design. Bigger steel and concrete titanic structures are currently being built.

But first, let’s have a look at some of the more interesting facts about the giants.

Table of Contents

Which is the tallest building in the world?

Burj Khalifa is the tallest building up until October 2020.  This mixed-use mega construction stands tall in the heart of downtown Dubai.

It presents itself as one of the most iconic city landmarks and perfectly placed at walking distance from The Dubai Mall and Dubai Opera House.

How many floors is the tallest building in the world?

The Burj Khalifa is not only the tallest free-standing building on the planet; it also has the largest number of stories inside it. It adds up to 163 floors in total. Not only that, but it holds the record for the highest occupied floor in the world.

How tall can you build?

In theory, you can build as high as you want if you have a large enough base; but that’s hardly applicable because of the spherical shape of our planet. The current tallest standing building reaches up to 330m above the ground.

Technically, the envisioned blueprints for a futuristic 4000meter-high building already exist. This is called the x-seed 4000, a city-inside-a-building concept birthed by Japan, inspired by its representative Mount Fuji

Are tall buildings safe?

The safety regarding tall buildings often poses a question in relation to fast access and functionality in case of incidents. The bigger the structure, the higher the risk constraints engineers and architects must deal with.

This doesn’t mean tall buildings are not safe by default, it means the list of precautions to be noted is longer and that height should be bounded by the ability to keep everyone inside safe.

Why are we Building skyscrapers?

One of the reasons for extremely tall buildings is the maximization of space; you optimize the use of land by building up and the amount of space you get (how many people you can fit).

This is not only about scope efficiency but also about economical one, a solicited location might require a lot of investment if the terrain to be purchased is larger.

Lastly, the aesthetic element that makes up the design of a city’s landscape is a factor that contributes to human psychology and humans’ state of mind.

How many skyscrapers are in the world?

A building is considered a skyscraper after it has reached 150m. The advances in technology and engineering have impacted the ability to build higher structures.

Considering the latter, the count of skyscrapers around the world is currently over 20000 buildings and growing yearly.

What city has the most skyscrapers?

According to 2020 surveys, the city with the most skyscrapers is Honk Kong, with over 350 buildings at least 150 meters above the ground. Six of this city’s tallest buildings tower over 300 meters of height.

Cities that fall behind Hong Kong include New York, Shenzhen and Dubai.

Do skyscrapers have a 13th floor?

It is extremely common to find many hotels and tall buildings skip the number 13 when counting upwards. This is because of an old superstition surrounding the number, these constructions tend to jump from floor 12 to floor 14 in the sequence.

However not every skyscraper falls into this category. The tallest of them all, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, is the best example which proves it.
