Architecture Portfolio: Examples and Templates

by | Nov 30, 2020

If you are an architect, you need an architecture portfolio. There – I said it. Might as well make it clear from the start. After all, isn’t that why you’re here?

Here’s why you need a portfolio: You are an artist. As such, you need a sample of your best works to show your potential clients what you can do.

Your portfolio is like your resume, your business card and your soul – all wrapped in a, hopefully, wonderful package.

As you grow professionally, the role of an architecture portfolio will help you get noticed to potential clients and will allow you to present your vision for the future work you want to do.

A portfolio allows you to show your best work without being repetitive. By structuring your work and services by different categories, you can highlight your most relevant projects and make a good first impression.

They can also provide the story of your projects by briefing clients on important elements of the projects such as the project scope, the challenges, the client brief, and your solution in a clear, coherent manner.

Furthermore, architect portfolios are a great way to actually share your thought process, they enable you to elaborate on how you approached the projects you have worked on. And to further emphasize your design philosophy, management process and execution of the project.

All in all, they’re an awesome way of letting images tell your story, of letting you showcase your work by presenting your project with good architecture photography, illustrations, project imagery with 3D visualization, plans and original sketches to spark the interest of the visitors.

What is an architect portfolio?

“The portfolio is a tool used throughout a career in architecture” (architecture.com)

A portfolio is a presentation collection of your work that potential clients can flip through. It gives them an overview of your designs, drawings, projects, etc.

When looking at an Architect’s portfolio, people are able to ascertain your skillset, your imagination and your specific design style.

Why is it important to you as an architect?

First of all, in most cases, this will be the final say in whether or not you get a project. So, it’s not even really a choice. If you aren’t able to showcase your work to potential clients, why should they choose you?

When looking at a portfolio, people are able to ascertain your skillset, your imagination and your specific design style.

Let’s say you’re a car salesman. You drive around in one of the newest cars available. Why? Because you need to show off the merchandise. You showcase some of the best you have to offer and inspire others to think “wow, that car. That’s my dream car.”

Why are architecture portfolios important to possible clients?

Clients are able to get inspired, to imagine and dream while they have your work and name in their hand.

When it comes to architecture, show don’t tell is really the way to go.

Because of this, clients need to see with their own eyes what you have done in order to understand what you can do.

Clients need a relatable example of your work. This is your chance to woo them, so to speak. Let them see what you can do, show them what you can for them.

Check out this example of a great architecture portfolio to see what it’s all about.

I am an architect – do I need a portfolio?

Even if you haven’t been or a project yet or haven’t constructed any of your designs, you still need a portfolio.

In fact, architecture portfolios are great in these cases as well. This is because of the fact that you can showcase design drafts, skill sets, competition participation designs, etc.

Use your portfolio to your full advantage, no matter where you are in the process.

You should be able to give people an idea of what you can do.

So, what exactly should you include in your portfolio?

Well, if we ask architecture.com, your portfolio “at entry level stage should demonstrate a broad mixture of your work, especially drawings”.

Archisoup.com makes it clear that any portfolio, whether entry level or senior, should present a “clear image of range, amount and diversity of your architectural skulls, knowledge and current experiences.”

It is super important that your portfolio includes your very best and recent designs as you are showcasing who you are and what you can do NOW.

When putting together a brochure or portfolio of your work, you should showcase the architectural process, not simply copy-paste a picture of the front of the newly constructed building.

People are interested in seeing the bones, the brain and the heart of your project.

Now, that I’ve made it clear that you definitely need a portfolio of some kind, it’s time to check out these examples and templates of portfolios and brochures.

So, If you are lacking inspiration for your portfolio template, you’ve come to the right place!  We have gathered a list with some of the best and most inspiring portfolio and brochure templates out there.

Get ready to brainstorm and begin your own!

Your architecture portfolio: a checklist

Before you go off and create your very own portfolio, or maybe just enhance the one you’ve already got, take a look at this list of dos and don’t.

Use this as a checklist to ensure that your portfolio is at its absolute strongest.

Do: Make sure the language and grammar of your portfolio is flawless.

Hopefully, this goes without saying, but just in case. It’s super important that you don’t have any spelling mistakes or editing errors. That just comes across as lazy. And let’s be honest, people do notice.

If you aren’t the strongest at grammar, or if English isn’t your first language, it’s a great idea to have someone proofread it for you.

Also, it’s always a good idea to run the text through Grammarly quickly. Just to be on the safe side.

Four eyes are better than two – and an online grammar checker might be a nice addition as well.

Believe me, this step should not be overlooked!

Don’t: Send your architecture portfolio in a humongous file.

Make it easy for the receiver – send your portfolio in a small PDF.

This allows them to search through your portfolio easily but it also allows them to keep your portfolio on hand, without it taking up all the space on their computer.

This could be a make or break move for you. If they save your portfolio, they can look at it in the feature, when they have a project that you might be perfect for.

However, if your file was huge and slow, well, then chances are that they just deleted it.

So, help yourself by helping them. Small PDF. Trust us.

Do: Organize your portfolio.

You need to take this to heart. Your portfolio is your calling card – you need it to be easily accessible and organized. It can’t be cluttered. It can’t be messy.

The layout of your portfolio is the thing that will decide whether clients will look at more than the first page.

Of course, using these templates will help you a lot, as they already have created the layout – Work smart, not hard. Am I right?

Don’t: Be afraid of white space

White space, that is space that isn’t filled out with pictures or text, is nothing to be afraid of.

Use it.

White space emphasizes anything it surrounds. Allow pictures to have white space – allow them to stand out. After all, that’s their whole job. They should stand apart.

Furthermore, white space is a great way of keeping things organized and ensures a clean layout

White space means that you haven’t filled every inch of your architecture portfolio with meaningless pictures and words.

Don’t choose the same pictures

Your portfolio is mainly made up of pictures. So, obviously, you need to choose the best of the best.

But you should make sure to diversify. Don’t fill up your architecture portfolio with 15 pictures of the front of a building.

Make sure that your portfolio portrays every step of the process. This could include inspiration, designs, 3D renditions, in-process pictures as well as end-results.

Make sure to showcase all of your abilities.

Do: Choose the right portfolio for you

You need to make sure that your architecture portfolio complements your design aesthetic.

Let’s say your designs are super minimalistic. Well, then it really doesn’t make sense for your portfolio to be filled with pictures and text. No, then your portfolio should be minimalistic as well.

Let your portfolio tell the story of your design.

Don’t: Be humble

I’m not saying you should boast or anything but I kind of am. If you’ve mentioned in the media, won an award, worked with a big client or received praise, well, it would be silly not to mention it.

After all, a portfolio is a way of selling yourself, your profile and your designs. So, give it everything you have.

Do: Be clear and concise

Get rid of unnecessary information and keep the presentation of your portfolio relevant, consistent and creative.

Sometimes less is more. And this is one of those times.

Don’t: Forget your resume

We’ve already ascertained that your architecture portfolio is everything. But don’t forget to include your actual resume! This could be on the inside of the front or back cover page.

You should include it so people have an easy overview of your expertise in letter format.

Also, this is a good way of including all relevant and important information, such as contact information, without having it disrupt the flow of your actual portfolio.
